About the Speakers

Awie Vlok:

Awie Vlok joined Stellenbosch University in 2011 in a research and lecturing capacity in innovation management and related fields at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. He served in management and functional specialist positions in the automotive, ICT, building & construction and other science and technology innovation value chains. He is well connected with the international innovation fraternity and has many years of experience in facilitating innovation projects from strategy and conceptualising to capacity building and market adoption stages. He facilitated high profile sessions in different parts of the world, including a Digital Futures for development workshop in Malaysia for the Global Research Alliance, CSIR/Pretoria University workshop for e-research infrastructure into the future, a Lessons Learnt workshop for delegates from France and South Africa on Stimulating Innovation and a workshop for the United Arab Emirates on Innovation in the Knowledge Economy in Abu Dhabi.

He is pursuing a doctorate in innovation leadership on which he presented at the 2011 International Conference on Leadership, Technology and Innovation Management in Turkey and attended the first Innovation Convention hosted by the European Commission in December 2011.

Alexandra Fraser:

Alexandra Fraser is the Business Development Manager for Invenfin, which supports and invests in start-up companies with globally scalable, innovative intellectual property and is wholly owned by the Remgro Group. She is involved in managing and assessing new investment proposal for Invenfin, using her technical and business background to achieve this. Alexandra completed both her B.SC in Molecular and Cell Biology and Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurial Management at UCT, before working for a number of companies in South Africa, Australia and the UK. Most recently she completed her Masters in International Business and Emerging Markets at the University of Edinburgh’s Business School, where her thesis looked at the Barriers to Deal Flow in the South African Venture Capital Industry. Alexandra has worked closely with Government, the Biotechnology and Healthcare sectors, University Technology Transfer Offices and the Private Sector to enable the formation of start-up companies. Alexandra is passionate about entrepreneurship and is often a guest lecture on entrepreneurship and venture capital.

Chris Vermeulen:

Chris Vermeulen was appointed as the General Manager of the Bandwidth Barn (Pty) Ltd in 2008.

Prior to joining the Bandwidth Barn, Chris gained extensive business experience across a number of sectors and has served in various executive management positions.

Chris is currently doing his Masters Degree in Business Administration with the University of Liverpool. His field of specialization is entrepreneurship development. In 2009 he was nominated as a finalist in the ICT Personality of the Year Awards for his contribution to the development of the Information & Communication Technology sector in the Western Cape. Chris is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Management Committee of the African Incubator Network, an organisation founded by infoDev to promote business incubation in Africa. In his role as GM at the Bandwidth Barn, Chris has been instrumental in organizing of the Cape Town Entrepreneurship Competition (CTEC), an initiative of the City of Cape Town, for the past three years.

Érik van der Vyver:


Érik specialises in the preparation and filing of both local and foreign patent applications, particularly electronic and electrical type inventions as well as information technology and computer implemented inventions. Érik’s expertise includes the preparation and prosecution of registered design applications in South Africa and abroad, patent and general intellectual property litigation, the drafting of patent infringement opinions and drafting of patent licence agreements.
He is also experienced in conducting patentability and prior art searches, particularly in relation to chemical and pharmaceutical inventions.
Érik is a part-time lecturer in intellectual property law at the University of Cape Town.

Christine Strutt:

With a background in commerce and marketing, Christine is motivated by strategic brand management that aims to derive the most value out of clients’ trade mark portfolios. Christine specialises in trade mark searches, the filing and prosecution of local, foreign and African trade mark applications, trade mark infringement and litigation matters as well as contractual IP and copyright related issues.

Karl and Ida Mynhart:

Karl – has a Cum Laude in graphic design. Won silver for Best publication design at the Sappi Think Ahead awards. Worked as senior designer for Evans Cycles in the UK. Has a private pilots license with conversions on four aircrafts and night rating. Has a passion for typography, photography, sneakers and beer (in reverse order or importance). Karl is the creative director and design.

Ida – has a First class honours in fashion design. Showed her final year collection at the London Graduate Fashion Week. Designed women’s, men’s, teens, and kids wear, as well as trend prediction and print work, for high-street retailers, suppliers and designers in London. Once had a band called ‘Ida’s hardcore band’… Has a passion for drawing (especially monsters), baking bread and could easily eat pasta for breakfast… Ida is the business director and illustrator.

Amhed Kajee:

Ahmed has a great interest in technology trends and developments and is at the forefront of advancements within the ICT and Telecoms sector. He is specifically focusing on mobile marketing, digital media and technology. His passion for business and entrepreneurship has resulted in a successful business career in all of his ventures – from R&D to marketing and everything in between. He has been interviewed by various publications, broadcasting channels and organisations. Having been self‐employed throughout his working career, Ahmed is perfectly suited to business operations and initiatives that require entrepreneurial flair and creativity.

Brian Currin:

Brian Currin is a freelance Web Marketer and Music Consultant who lives, works and plays in Cape Town, South Africa.

He has been involved in the sales and marketing of technology products since the early 80′s, holding various sales, marketing and management positions with Panasonic, Hicor and Sony. Over the years, Brian has helped many South African music- and non-music-related businesses establish a presence on the internet. He is a strong believer in web standards compliance, search engine optimization and social media marketing.

His latest venture provides software for organisations looking to constructively engage with their customers and employees – evly.com. Eric is passionate about all types of online marketing, but especially search marketing (pay per click & search engine optimisation), affiliate marketing and social media marketing. He is based in Cape Town, South Africa, but spent the first half of 2011 living in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. He speaks regularly at tech conferences, (he was president of the Ernst & Young Toastmasters club in Cape Town in 2010, and has achieved the “Competent Communicator” level in Toastmasters International) and writes for business & technology media. Eric was included in Mail & Guardian’s “Top 200 young people to have lunch with”, and Old Mutual’s “Top 36 South African young entrepreneurs. The ‘Business Building Workshop Series 2012′ is based on the SAFIPA ICT and Mobile Business Building Programme, which was originally compiled by RIIS for ICT and mobile entrepreneurs and small business owners/managers as well as IT departments accross all sectors. ‘The Business Building Workshop Series 2012′ is also open to other sectors beyond the ICT and Mobile Industry.
